I am a sociologist with research interests in social diversity and methodology.
Research profile
My research examines how social relations, forms of participation and knowledge are practically organised under conditions of societal change. Empirically, I work on migration and postmigrant everyday life, media and scientific knowledge production, and dementia and care. Across these fields, I am interested in how categories, relations and expectations are produced, negotiated and transformed in everyday and institutional practice.
Approach and methodology
My work draws on practice theory and the sociology of knowledge. I approach social order as an ongoing practical accomplishment, produced through interaction, embodied conduct, institutional routines and material or media arrangements.
Methodologically, I work primarily with ethnography, video-based interaction analysis and interpretive sequence analysis. A further strand of my research examines qualitative research itself: how empirical materials become data, how interpretations are produced, and how methodological practices shape what can count as evidence.
Current position
I am Interim Professor of Methods in Empirical Educational and Social Research at the University of Siegen. Previously, I held a research and teaching position in General Sociology and Cultural Sociology at the University of Konstanz.
